Greetings & Thoughts
Last full week to prepare a CCB application and more
I’ll again encourage Petaluma residents to apply for appointment to one of the many City commissions, committees, and boards. Serving productively on a CCB takes work and study but offers rewards commensurate with the effort. Plus, appointees have a chance to make positive changes in our community. The deadline for application is May 31. The link to the City application webpage is on the Urban Chat calendar. Also, I remain willing to offer advice and insights.
Or, if you’d like to chat about CCB opportunities in person, you can come to Expo 2023 this evening, 5:00 to 8:00, at the Community Center. Urban Chat will have a table there. I’ll arrive slightly late but will stay for the remainder of the evening. There will be several Urban Chat folks participating, so you can have conversations about the multiple Urban Chat efforts underway.
Also, the monthly Urban Chat lunch will be on Thursday. We could also have conversations about CCB opportunities at that event.
Lastly, Know Before You Grow will have a forum Wednesday evening on office-to-residential conversion. Many of us have probably heard about this possibility of increasing housing stock. This will be your chance to become better educated about the opportunities and the constraints. More information is below and on the Urban Chat calendar.
Questions or comments? Let me know. – Dave Alden 707-338-8388
P.S. New folks can be added to this conversation here.

Upcoming Meetings
All events are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to participate in person or online.
Monday, May 22 (Today!) - Cool Petaluma
Cool Petaluma will host the 2023 Expo on community action. Urban Chat will have a table. Please come by to say hello and to talk about everything Urban Chat is doing.
The Expo will open at 5:00pm. Further details are on the Urban Chat calendar, link above.
Wednesday, May 24 (This week) – Know Before You Grow
KBYG will be about office-to-residential conversion. A video about conversion projects in San Francisco and Chicago will be shown, after which local architects Ross Jones and Kevin Kelly will talk about their experiences and insights on conversion projects.
Office-to-residential conversion is often mentioned as a possible path to increasing housing stock. However, as is often true of land-use, the reality is more complicated than the vision.
The forum will convene on Zoom at 7:00pm. Additional information is provided on the Urban Chat calendar, link above.
Thursday, May 25 (This week) – Petaluma Urban Chat
The monthly meeting of Urban Chat is almost always agenda-free, allowing an enjoyable and enlightening conversation to wander freely over the urbanist landscape.
The exchange of ideas will commence at noon. Other information is provided on the Urban Chat calendar, link above.
Wednesday, May 31 - Petaluma City Clerk
This will be the application deadline for City commissions, committees, and boards.
