Greetings & Thoughts

For those who didn’t attend last week’s Planning Commission workshop on the 500 Hopper Street project, the comments submitted by Urban Chat were well received by the Commission which incorporated the thoughts into their responses.  The applicant was strongly encouraged to consider the Commission's concerns.  Thanks to everyone who helped prepare the Urban Chat comments.

For those who haven’t yet read the Urban Chat submittal, we supported housing on the site but asked for the housing to be consistent with the climate goals of the community, including being less car-dependent and being buffered from the future rise of the Petaluma River. During the day before the workshop, we engaged with several other parties who were going to participate in the workshop and made plans to continue coordination as the project planning moves ahead with the Commission's feedback.

Looking at the week ahead, the PBAC meeting on Tuesday will touch on two items that should be important to urbanists concerned with reduced car dependency.

More Details

All events are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to participate in person or on-line.

Wednesday, February 1 (this week) – Petaluma Pedestrian Bicycle Advisory Committee
Agenda items for the meeting will include Vision Zero, the goal of eliminating traffic deaths primarily by rebalancing the equation between cars and other modes, and a progress update on the Fifth Street Bike Boulevard, a long proposed alternative for bicyclists not comfortable with Petaluma Boulevard South.

The meeting will convene at 6:30pm.  The agenda is here. The link to attend and to participate in the meeting is here.

Monday, February 6 – Petaluma City Council
The Council will consider an agreement with SMART on the Corona station, for which the City is providing $2 million in funding, and appointment of GPAC members to replace those lost to relocation or election to the City Council.

The public portion of the meeting is expected to convene at 6:30pm. The links to the agenda and to attend and participate in the meeting will be provided when published by the City.

Tuesday, February 14 – Petaluma Planning Commission
The Housing Element is the City document laying out the strategy for meeting the housing needs of the community over the next eight years, including complying with the Regional Housing Needs Allocation.

The Planning Commission previously reviewed and approved the proposed Housing Element before submittal to the state Department of Housing and Community Development for their review.  HCD comments have now been received and Planning has edited the Housing Element accordingly.  The Planning Commission will review the newly edited version.

The meeting is expected to convene at 7:00pm. The links to the agenda and to attend and participate in the meeting will be provided when published by the City.  What better way could there be to spend Valentine’s Day?

Thursday, February 16 – Petaluma General Plan Advisory Committee
The General Plan Advisory Committee will convene for their monthly meeting.  The topic hasn’t yet been determined.

The meeting will convene at 6:30pm.  The links to the agenda and to attend and participate in the meeting will be provided when published by the City.

Thursday, February 23 – Petaluma Urban Chat
The monthly meeting of Urban Chat is almost always agenda-free, allowing an enjoyable and enlightening conversation to wander freely over the urbanist landscape.

The meeting will convene at noon.  With the pandemic hopefully behind us, we’ve resumed meeting in person at the Aqus Café at 2nd and H Streets.
