Greetings & Thoughts

The most urbanism-pertinent meeting of the week remains the Tuesday hearing of the Historical and Cultural Preservation.  Urban Chat has submitted comments and many of us will be in the Zoom audience.  The comments will be linked from the City agenda page, but anyone who wants a copy more quickly may email me.  More information on the hearing, including links, is below.

In other updates:

  • A reception for the new Mayor and Councilmembers will be held at City Hall this evening at 5:00pm.  The public portion of the Council meeting will then convene at 6:30pm, after a 30-minute closed Council session.  The Council agenda webpage of the City website isn’t currently working, so I’m not able to check the agenda items.

  • (Addendum: As of this morning, the Council agenda webpage is again working.  The link to the agenda is here.)

  • The deadline for applications to the SMART Citizens Oversight Council has been pushed back a week, to Friday, January 20.

  • All of you should have received the survey about setting 2023 directions for Know Before You Grow.  The initial response has been strong, enthusiastic, and opinionated.  If you haven’t yet responded, be sure to do so.  If you didn’t get the survey email, I can help.

Questions or comments?  Let me know.  – Dave Alden  707-338-8388

Tuesday, January 10 (Tomorrow)
Petaluma Historical and Cultural Preservation Committee. The HCPC will conduct a hearing on the compliance of the proposed Hotel Weaver with the downtown historic district.  The hotel would be within the district, although the former use of the site, a small footprint gas station, was not considered contributory. The meeting will convene at 4:00pm.  The link to the agenda is here.  The link to the staff report is here.  The link to attend and to participate in the meeting is here

Monday, January 16 – City of Petaluma
Deadline for applications to add new members to the General Plan Advisory Committee, Transit Committee, and more.  More information is here.  I remain willing to chat with anyone considering applying.

Thursday, January 19 – Petaluma General Plan Advisory Committee
The General Plan Advisory Committee will convene for their monthly meeting.  The topic hasn’t yet been announced.

The meeting will convene at 6:30pm.  The links to the agenda and to attend and participate in the meeting will be provided when published by the City.

Friday, January 20 – Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit
Deadline for applications to the reconfigured SMART Citizens Oversight Committee.   More information is provided here.  Urban Chat will likely be willing to write a letter of recommendation for any Urban Chat participant who wants to apply.

Thursday, January 26 – Petaluma Urban Chat
The monthly meeting of Urban Chat is almost always agenda-free, allowing an enjoyable and enlightening conversation to wander freely over the urbanist landscape.

The meeting will convene at noon.  With the pandemic hopefully behind us, we’ve resumed meeting in person at the Aqus Café at 2nd and H Streets.

Dave Alden

Dave Alden was the blogger whose scribblings led to the first Urban Chat meeting. Since that time, he has served as the de facto executive director, spearheading several Urban Chat initiatives while also working to bring in enough other people that Urban Chat will live on when he steps away into an urban retirement of downtown living, sidewalk dining, walking, and transit.
